It is that time of year again folks! The All Star Game is here, and with it, comes the announcement of the starters and reserves for both teams. With that being said, here are the starters and reserves for both squads:
C- Salvador Perez (Royals, 4th All Star Selection)
1B- Eric Hosmer (Royals, 1st All Star Selection)
2B- Jose Altuve (Astros, 4th All Star Selection)
SS- Xander Bogaerts (Red Sox, 1st All Star selection)
3B- Manny Machado (Orioles, 3rd All Star Selection)
OF- Mike Trout (Angels, 5th All Star Selection)
OF- Jackie Bradley Jr (Red Sox, 1st All Star Selection)
OF- Mookie Betts (Red Sox, 1st All Star Selection)
DH- David Ortiz (Red Sox, 10th All Star Selection)
Some of these are no brainers (Trout, Ortiz, Altuve). Others are quite interesting (Betts, Bradley) Who knew that the Red Sox would have 4 All Stars in their starting lineup. At least their fans didn’t stuff the ballot box, unlike Reds fans in the 1950’s and Royals fans last year. On another note, I’m surprised that this is Eric Hosmer’s 1st All Star Selection. Maybe I have a bad memory, who knows. Anyways, on with the show…
AL Reserves and Pitchers
DH: Edwin Encarnacion (Blue Jays)
Infielders: Miguel Cabrera (Tigers), Josh Donaldson (Blue Jays), Robinson Cano (Mariners), Francisco Lindor (Indians), Eduardo Nunez (Twins)
Yankees could have used Nunez today, had they not released him two years ago.
Outfielders: Mark Trumbo (Orioles), Carlos Beltran (Yankees), Ian Desmond (Rangers)
We’re starting to see the old versions of these three again this season.
Catchers: Matt Wieters (Orioles), Stephen Vogt (Athletics)
Pitchers: Chris Sale (White Sox), Craig Kimbrel (Red Sox), Zach Britton (Orioles), Andrew Miller (Yankees), Wade Davis (Royals), Marco Estrada (Blue Jays), Cole Hamels (Rangers), Danny Salazar (Indians), Steven Wright (Red Sox), Dellin Betances (Yankees), Brad Brach (Orioles), Alex Colome (Rays), Kelvin Herrera (Royals), Will Harris (Astros)
Let it Rain Red Sox All Stars!
C- Buster Posey (Giants, 4th All Star Selection)
1B- Anthony Rizzo (Cubs, 3rd All Star Selection)
2B- Ben Zobrist (Cubs, 3rd All Star Selection)
3B- Kris Bryant (Cubs, 2nd All Star Selection)
SS- Addison Russell (Cubs, 1st All Star Selection)
OF- Bryce Harper (Nationals, 4th All Star Selection)
OF- Yoenis Cespedes (Mets, 2nd All Star Selection)
OF- Dexter Fowler (Cubs, 1st All Star Selection)
The Cubs have 5 of their starters in the All Star Game Starting Lineup. Do I need to say more about them?
NL Reserves and Pitchers
Infielders: Wil Myers (Padres),Corey Seager (Dodgers), Paul Goldschmidt (Diamondbacks), Nolan Arenado (Rockies), Matt Carpenter (Cardinals), Daniel Murphy (Nationals)
Just what I expected here.
Outfielders: Adam Duvall (Reds), Odubel Herrera (Phillies), Carlos Gonzalez (Rockies), Marcell Ozuna (Marlins)
Got some nice feel good stories here. Duvall went from a career minor leaguer with type 1 diabetes to an All Star in a matter of two years. Herrera was a Rule 5 Draft Pick in 2014, and he is an All-Star two seasons later. Ozuna struggled last year, an All-Star the next year.
Catchers: Jonathan Lucroy (Brewers), Wilson Ramos (Nationals)
Not a surprise here.
Pitchers: Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), Jake Arrieta (Cubs), Noah Syndergaard (Mets), Stephen Strasburg (Nationals), Madison Bumgarner (Giants), Jose Fernandez (Marlins), Johnny Cueto (Giants), Jon Lester (Cubs), Julio Teheran (Braves), Jeurys Familia (Mets), Kenley Jansen (Dodgers), Mark Melancon (Pirates), A.J. Ramos (Marlins), Fernando Rodney (Marlins)
I get that some garbage players are on the team, because each team needs at least one All Star representative, but why Fernando Rodney? I get that he was good with the Padres (0.31 ERA), but he has imploded with the Marlins (6.00 ERA). It’s funny how the Padres traded him to Miami for a bag of Doritos, and becomes an All-Star a couple of weeks later.
That’s all for the rosters, but then there’s the Final Five. Fans can decide who is the final player on each All Star Roster. Here are the candidates for each league:
American League Final Five
Ian Kinsler (Tigers)
Evan Longoria (Rays)
Dustin Pedroia (Red Sox)
Michael Saunders (Blue Jays)
George Springer (Astros)
National League Final Five
Brandon Belt (Giants)
Starling Marte (Pirates)
Ryan Braun (Brewers)
Jake Lamb (Diamondbacks)
Trevor Story (Rockies)
That’s all for the All Star Rosters. I’ll be back with more later.
